The first thing you notice when you see Founders Brewing's Double Trouble is its unique label design.
The
image features a mustached man wearing a curious but bitter expression.
As the name of the beer suggests, the face is double. When holding the
bottle upside down the mustached face becomes clean shaven with a
friendly and sweet smile.
Double Trouble has a dank pine scent
containing hints of citrus fruit. On first taste, the beer washes
over your palate with a crisp, zesty flavor which is faithful to its 86 IBU's but does not overwhelm you as some beers with the same IBU's do.
The
initial flavor quickly retreats and is replaced with a tongue-tickling
spice. As the beer makes its way towards the back of the tongue the 9.4% ABV and
those IBU's take center stage, . A bitter dryness takes over when it finally reaches
the final taste buds that parches the palate and leaves you wanting to
immediately take another sip.
But
in the end, Double Trouble's peculiar double-faced label sticks in my
mind. When it's tilted to take a sip, the sweet-smiling face reflects
Double Trouble's initial smooth and fruity flavor. Once upright, the face reverts back to the mustached man donning that curious, bitter facial expression.
